Life of Brian (1979)

Monty Python’s Life of Brian (1979) — From the Shirley Bassey-esque opening credits song to the crucifixion sing-along at the end, there really is a whole lot to love about this movie.  I know it encountered a lot of protests when it first came out but watching it, there really isn’t anything offensive about Christianity, in my humble Catholic opinion.  Some people drastically mis-hearing the Beatitudes is about as close to blasphemy as the movie ever gets.  True, there’s cursing, violence, and nudity, but those things are in most movies nowadays and hardly warrant protests.  But I digress.  I think whether or not people will like this movie depends mostly on their sense of humor [or humour since it’s English].  Namely if you have one you should like it and if you don’t you probably won’t.  Here are the important lessons of this movie:

I. Think for yourself.

II. Everything is funnier with a British accent.

III. Don’t take anything too seriously.

IV. If you are going to a write a hostile message in Latin, be sure to know your declensions and conjugations well.

and, most importantly…

V. Always look on the bright side of life.
