The Station Agent (2003)
The Station Agent (2003) — So in two days and two movies, Tom McCarthy has become one of my favorite writer-directors. Well done, sir. This is as good a movie about friendship as I have ever seen. Peter Dinklage turns in a great performance without ever saying much. Bobby Cannavale is great while saying a lot. Patricia Clarkson is Patricia Clarkson and that’s almost always a good thing. And Michelle Williams brings that great indie cuteness and vulnerability she brings to everything nowadays that makes you forget she was ever a teen star on the WB. Again, the story is allowed to play out at a natural pace without ever feeling slow. In addition to being a good actor in movies like Good Night and Good Luck and TV shows like The Wire, McCarthy is proving himself to be a master storyteller and I can’t wait to see what he does next.
