Ninja Assassin (2009)

Ninja Assassin (2009) — Awesome violence.  Mediocre plot.  Going into the movie I thought I was going to have a problem with all the CG blood (I think CG makes gore look really fake and film-makers shouldn’t be so quick to cast away practical on-set effects, which tend to lend a more visceral feel to… well, viscera.) but I was okay with it.  It reminded me of the over-the-top fake-looking blood from Shaw Brothers movies.  Not that this movie approaches the bad-ass-itude of 70s and 80s martial arts flicks, but it’s clearly aiming for that.  While like I said the plot is very lame and for some reason two of the Japanese-raised ninjas have conspicuously American accents (and everyone speaks English all the time, be they in Japan or Germany) but that blood keeps on flying (though curiously never landing on the ground because it’s CG and not actually there on the set) and limbs keeps falling and the movie is pretty entertaining despite its many shortcomings.
