How to Train Your Dragon (2010) — As much as I bitch about Spongebob, Hannah Montana, and the sorry state of children’s entertainment nowadays, movies like this prove that there’s still a place for quality. If kids today are anything like I was, then they like movies that give them credit for a modicum of intelligence. And have dragons. I liked the humor, the heart, the oddly Scottish-accented Vikings, and the of course the dragons. Dragons are just awesome. I want one. The vocal cast (comprised mostly of lowbrow R-rated comedy veterans like Jay Baruchel, Jonah Hill, Chistopher “McLovin” Mintz-Plasse, TJ Miller, & Kristen Wiig, but also including Gerard Butler, America Ferrera, and the always-awesome Craig Ferguson) does a great job and the animation really fits the tone of the movie. The 3D isn’t mind-blowing like Avatar or used with as masterful a touch as Up, but it makes the action scenes action-ier (yeah, I make up words, deal with it) and certainly doesn’t hurt. This is just a fun feel-good movie that should be checked out on a giant IMAX screen.
