City of the Living Dead (1980)

City of the Living Dead (1980) — If you are the type who pukes your guts out seeing gore in movies you might want to steer clear of this one in which someone literally does puke their guts out. But what else would anyone expect from Lucio Fulci, the Italian horror maestro who made Zombi 2 (known stateside as Zombie)? This movie does suffer lightly from the bad dubbing typical of many Italian horror flicks from the 70s but the atmosphere is great and there’s a lot of creepy imagery (a hanging evil priest!) and very visceral gore effects (including one great one with a drill). This movie had me in its hypnotic hold right up until the very last scene, which I couldn’t quite make sense of. It’s like Fulci wanted one last scare before the end credits but couldn’t really think of one so he tried to fake it. It’s a minor quibble though as any real fan of gory horror flicks needs to see this movie.
