Kate & Leopold (2001)

Kate & Leopold (2001) — So my unofficial James Mangold film festival (thus far consisting on Knight and Day & Identity) got an unplanned extension when I saw this movie was on cable (still might watch 3:10 to Yuma later this week).  Now I generally don’t like romantic comedies.  This is not due to any particular disdain I have for the genre, it’s just a sad fact that most of them suck.  This is one of those pleasant exceptions.  Meg Ryan plays the same character that exists in most romantic comedies (the type that Katharine Heigl has been trying and failing to pull off her whole career).  This is back when Meg Ryan still had human lips and they weren’t blown up to some unnatural size.  Hugh Jackman exudes a very old school style of charm peddling the antiquated notion that chivalry is not dead.  There’s not a whole lot to say about this movie other than it is thoroughly pleasant.
