Jason Lives: Friday the 13th Part VI (1986)

Jason Lives: Friday the 13th Part VI (1986) — At what point does a series descend into self-parody?  It’s not as if the Friday the 13th films ever held to a very standard of excellence but they are what they are and what they are is fucking fun.  From the very moment Jason does a parody of the James Bond gun barrel intro you know they are just flat-out going for laughs in this one.  There are punch lines and direct winks at the camera and whole lot of other outright silliness.  There’s even one bit with an American Express that was added specifically because the director wanted people to shout “don’t leave home without it!” in the theater.  I guess the film can get away with having no scares if it’s not really going for any.  The film unfolds without any nudity, disgraceful for this series (there’s even a sex scene where both participants are fully clothed!) and the gore isn’t even all that great for most of it.  There is one severed head and a blood-spattered cabin that keep the blood flowing but overall this is one of the tamer installments of the franchise.  The movie is fun to laugh at but in the end winking at the camera can only get you so far. My review of the entire Friday the 13th series is available at http://12ftdwende.com/family/?p=5364
