Hatchet (2006)

Hatchet (2006) — The tagline on the cover of this movie is “Old School American Horror.”  For better or worse that’s what you get.  A bunch of people go on a “haunted swamp” tour in Louisiana and surprise surprise there is a maniac (or possible ghost) stalking and killing them one by one.  Tonally, this film matches the 80s slasher flicks that inspired it perfectly.  That means, like the films that inspired it, it isn’t scary (though it does have a bunch of good jumps).  That doesn’t matter so much to me though because if you like these types of movies it’s a hell of a lot of fun.  You know the tropes of the genre so who dies is pretty obvious for the most part.  The gore effects are fantastic.  It’s nice to see some people using the old school effects instead of cartoony-looking CG.  True sometimes when they switch between and actor and a dummy that gets ripped apart it’s pretty obvious but that’s part of the charm of these movies, seeing behind the curtain.  My main complaint is that the film’s deformed slasher, Victor Crowley (played by 4-time Jason Voorhees actor Kane Hodder), looks pretty bad.  Even back in the 80s you had much better makeup effects than that.  But it’s a pretty small quarrel with what overall is a pretty fun flick.
