Red Riding: In the Year of Our Lord 1974 (2009) — So there was a tremendous amount of hype on these movies and from the first chapter I’m not sure that it’s going to live up to it. That’s what I hate about hype. Taken on its own, this is a good movie, but not really a great one. There is a compelling mystery and an interesting lead character, played by future Spider-Man Andrew Garfield. Garfield’s Eddie Dunford is an inexperienced reporter hired to the Yorkshire Post, at about the same time a young girl is abducted. Dunford links the kidnapping to two previous ones. There’s also another situation being investigated by a friend of his about local businessman (Sean Bean) and corruption within the police department. With so much going on it’s a wonder that the movie still manages to feel a bit slow-paced, and not necessarily in a good way. The movie has a bleak look to it and the tone matches. In the end I would say that I liked the movie enough that I will check out the other two.
