Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010)

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010) — The ensuing months have done nothing to diminish my love of this movie. If you want to bitch about the lack of unique film-making these days, you better have seen this movie because when movies like this tank at the box office (as this one did) it doesn’t encourage studios to take the chance of trusting great directors like Edgar Wright to have free reign to complete their mad visions. I’m not saying this movie is necessarily for everyone. I’m sure those older than the gamer generation might have trouble relating and even under-16 viewers might not catch specific references (hell, I forgot all about Crash and the Boys and I’m not even sure I ever heard of Clash at Demonhead) but the main strength of the movie is that it goes deeper than hip references and stylistic flourishes. There is a real human story here with real human character that help it connect beyond the elaborately choreographed fight scenes. The villainous Seven Evil Exes are just exagerated versions of the assholes most of us have encountered in our pasts. While most of us don’t have the pleasure of kicking them in the head so hard they explode into coins, we can nonetheless relate. If you haven’t seen this movie, remedy the situation at your soonest convenience. My original review is available at http://12ftdwende.com/family/?p=4328
