Sugar (2008)

Sugar (2008) — This is an amazing movie.  You should see it.  That’s what you should take away from this review since I don’t really know how to describe this movie that really gets across what makes it so good (in other words I really suck at this whole criticism thing).  The film is about a baseball player named Miguel “Sugar” Santos, played by first-time actor Algenis Perez Soto (there are no other credits on his imdb page but he should be getting some more work off of this if there is truly a just and loving God).  He is from the Dominican Republic and he gets to come to spring training for minor league ball, along with a whole bunch of other people.  This isn’t a standard rags-to-riches sports movie.  It isn’t a rise-and-fall movie either.  This movie is based more around REAL human drama than clichés sports flick contrivances.  This shouldn’t be much of a surprise since it’s by Anna Bowden and Ryan Fleck, who did the great movie Half Nelson a few years back.  There are parts of this movie which made me very happy and others that made me very sad because it’s one of those movies where the characters are actually worth caring about.  Totally worth seeing.
