Person of Interest – “Pilot”

Person of Interest – “Pilot

Jonathan Nolan is not as well-known as his brother Christopher, who directed the films Batman Begins and Inception. However he wrote the short story “Memento Mori” which was the basis of Christopher’s breakthrough film Memento. He also helped write Christopher’s films The Dark Knight and The Prestige. Now he’s created a new show on CBS called Person of Interest, produced by J.J. Abrams of Lost and Alias fame. It stars Jim Caviezel as John Reese, a man with a background in the military and with the CIA. He’s long since left that life after the death of someone close to him when he’s given the chance to work for a man calling himself Finch (Michael Emerson). Finch gets social security numbers from a super-powerful computer he designed for Homeland Security. The social security numbers belong to people who are involved in a premeditated murder. They could be the victims. They could the perpetrators. Finch needs Reese in order to prevent people from needlessly dying. Reese needs Finch for a sense of purpose. The cast also includes Academy Award nominee Taraji P. Henson as a detective looking into Reese, whose fingerprints are connected with crimes all around the country. The show could get better or get worse but the pilot is very engaging and I’m hooked. I hope the show doesn’t merely follow a case-of-the-week formula but builds a more detailed mythology. With Abrams involved, I don’t think I need to be worried.
