Snow Angels (2007)

Snow Angels (2007) — This is one of those instances where I like a lot of things about a movie but the movie itself comes up short for me. Most of that I think is that I like David Gordon Green’s style so much but in this case the substance wasn’t as intriguing to me. I never felt too involved with the struggles of the characters. I’m not one of those people who needs characters in movies to be likable but I should hopefully be able in some way to identify with them. I don’t really know why but I just couldn’t here. This movie is just an artfully made series of depressing stories that left me bummed but otherwise unmoved (I can see why after this downer, Green would make the shift to a stoner comedy like Pineapple Express). Kate Beckinsale and Sam Rockwell have a lot to work with as actors but other parts like the ones played by Michael Angarano and Olivia Thirlby feel underwritten. I have like every other film Green has made so this one disappointed me. Oh well, 4 out of 5 ain’t bad (and Your Highness looks funny, though I do wish he’d get back to his George Washington/All the Real Girls/Undertow style movies).
