It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia – “Frank Reynolds’ Little Beauties

What does it say about the society we live in that It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, the show that most frequently traffics in “offensive” humor, manages to be somehow less horrible and wrong than the real child beauty pageants such as those featured on reality shows like Toddlers and Tiaras? It’s a sick, sad world out there. Nine times out of ten, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia manages to mock it by being even sicker. This episode is that tenth time when they have to tone it down. That’s probably due to the fact that the producers have souls and therefore couldn’t makes little girls wear stripper outfits and more makeup than the KISS Army. Even in an episode that features two child molesters being apprehended, the real thing is just so much worse.

All things being equal, this was not one of the show’s stronger episodes. It was funny. It’s a funny show made by funny people, it’s pretty much always going to have a bunch of laugh-out-loud moments, but the storytelling and obscene absurdity the show thrives on just didn’t seem to be firing on all cylinders tonight. Charlie’s songwriting is always funny, though he’ll never top “Day Man” (ah-AH-ah). Fat Mac is still wringing out humor from his unhealthy weight gain, and constant use of the phrase “this is what America is all about” to justify just about anything. Frank’s insistence that he is not a pedophile (which makes him seem like more of a pedophile) is funny. This episode is funny in a lot of ways. Maybe it’s just the uncomfortable subject matter but it just felt like an off week.
