Hatchet II (2010)

Hatchet II (2010) – Usually the phrase “more of the same” is a bad thing… usually. Not always. Not this time. The first Hatchet was an awesome throwback to 1980s-style slasher movies. The gore is all old-school practical effects and none of that cartoony CGI shit. The lead actress of the original film, Tamara Feldman, opted not to return for this installment but it’s okay because she’s been replaced with Halloween scream queen Danielle Harris. Original Fright Night director Tom Holland, Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood director John Carl Buechler, former Leatherface R.A. Mihailoff, and AJ Bowen from The Signal and The House of the Devil also join this time around. As evidence by EVERYTHING IN THE MOVIE, director Adam Green is kind of an enthusiast of the genre. His casting of experienced horror actors/film-makers reflects that. Bonus awesomeness: Emma Bell’s character from Frozen has a small cameo on a TV news report. Frozen‘s Shawn Ashmore also has a cameo in an unrelated role. Erstwhile Jason Voorhees Kane Hodder returns as swamp ghost Victor Crowley and I don’t know why but the problems I had with the makeup when I first saw the movie are gone. I’m cool with it now. Tony Todd’s cameo in the original is expanded to a meatier role this time around. The blood flows. Gratuitous nudity ensues. Old school American horror lives again.
