The Kid Stays in the Picture (2002)
The Kid Stays in the Picture (2002) – Is The Kid Stays in the Picture based on Robert Evans’ autobiography of the same name? You betcha. Does Evans narrate this documentary himself? Oh yeah, he does. Is my asking and answering rhetorical questions in a cheap imitation of Evans’ style starting to get annoying? You bet your ass it is. Robert Evans started as a businessman, was discovered out of nowhere as an actor, and when his acting career didn’t really go anywhere decided he wanted to be a producer. And he did, heading Paramount studios during its amazing string of commercial and critical successes in the late 1960s and early 70s including The Godfather, Love Story, and Chinatown. During that time he slept with movie stars, did tons of drugs, got in trouble with the law, lost it all, and got it back again. This movie covers it all and Evans seem reasonably candid about it, while still retaining his trademark self-assuredness. This documentary comes highly recommended for anyone who likes behind-the-scenes Hollywood stuff. Does that include me? Oh yes it does…
