The Big Bang Theory – “The Wiggly Finger Catalyst

As I’ve frequently stated in these recap/reviews, I have not previously been a regular viewer of The Big Bang Theory. Most of the characters have been clearly developed but I’ve never got a clear sense of Raj (Kunal Nayyar). He seems to be doing the same kind of “awkward foreigner” shtick that Wilmer Valderrama did on That 70s Show, but smarter.  This episode contains the new (I think?) revelation that he’s rich. Really Rich. Like Richie Rich rich. Somewhere between Bruce Wayne and Scrooge McDuck (Forbes Fictional 15 puts that somewhere between $7 billion and $14.1 billion). Of course that casts suspicion on his new deaf girlfriend (Katie Leclerc). The idea that Raj could only succeed with a girl who couldn’t hear the stupid things he says is kind of silly, but it works better once she’s revealed as a gold-digger (despite Penny’s assertion that handicapped people are all nice). Actually there seem to be a lot of shots taken at the deaf. It’s kind of uncomfortable. Leclerc is partially deaf due to Ménière’s disease, so she must be cool with it. The B-story involving Sheldon making all trivial decisions with Dungeons and Dragons dice seems thoroughly out of character for such a control freak, but laughs were mined form the premise so no major complaints I suppose. Actually, I think that sums up the episode as a whole.
