Hung – “Take the Cake or Are You Packing?” & “Mister Drecker or Ease Up on the Whup-Ass”

Hung – “Take the Cake or Are You Packing?

So I didn’t do any blogging last week so I’m kind of doing double-duty this week to catch up. So first I’m going over last week’s episode before moving on to this week’s. Lenore is sending Jason to Ray’s clients and she has hacked Tanya’s email so the clients don’t even know they’re cheating on Orgasmic Living (because people who sleep with prostitutes are such big believers in fidelity). Ray and Tanya have different ideas on how to deal with the situation, and also different ideas on just who’s running this show. Ray asserts it’s a partnership but Tanya believes she calls the shots. She goes to meet with Jason, and of course the meeting turns to fucking. Ray tries to confront Jason but Jason is younger and runs much faster.

I do have to say my two favorite scenes involved Rebecca Creskoff as Lenore. There’s something very watchable about her, and not just when she’s cavorting around naked. The scene where tracks down Jason’s fiancée and tells her she fucked him is yet another “Lenore is a total bitch and a force of unstoppable destruction” scene, but she always manages to find the humor in such material. Not to mention that the fiancée seems so sweet that it highlights how evil Lenore can be. The second scene of hers I liked was when she and Tanya just got in an all-out brawl.

The season seems to be headed interesting places. I think making Tanya and Ray successful at the start of the season was a great movie. They’re no longer desperate people struggling to get by. Now they have something to lose. Eddie Jemison, no longer a credited cast member, showed up this year to tell Jess that he would not be giving her a check (um, depending on whatever the terms of their divorce were, isn’t that illegal?). Even with a spine, Ronnie is one of the least interesting characters on the show. I hope they resolve this storyline quickly so he can just not be around anymore. Conversely, Tanya visited Charlie in prison. Lennie James has been ADDED to the credits so I’m guessing we’ll be seeing more Charlie this year. Yay!

Mister Drecker or Ease Up on the Whup-Ass

Okay so here’s my problem with Hung. I do not care about Jess or the kids. I just don’t. However, providing for his family is one of the main reasons that Ray got into the whole man-whoring profession to begin with so there’s really no way to write them out. The kids have already been half-written-out. Have they done anything meaningful this season? With the new angle of Ray and Tanya defending their successful business, I don’t know that the show really has any room for Jess’s divorce or new job or whatever the hell she’s up to nowadays. Speaking of dropped characters, where has Mike been? I mean, I can’t say I’ve been craving more Mike on the show, but Gregg Henry is still listed in the main credits so I guess they must have something planned for him.

Charlie is now living with Tanya, which is a cool development. Jason’s fiancée Sandee (Analeigh Tipton) proves to not be quite as sweet or innocent as she was first portrayed. I would love to see a second prostitution ring slip out of Lenore’s grasp. Then again, while Sandee appears to be a girl of flexible morals she still doesn’t seem especially bright so wrestling control of Jason away from a Machiavellian bitch like Lenore might be a bit much to expect of her. The other exciting guest star of the night was Kaitlin Doubleday as Logan, a former student of Ray’s. She initially just wants to pick him up in a bar but she eventually figures out his latest career move and wants to hire him. Ray holds out for a while but eventually realizes that when you’re a prostitute, not nailing a hot 25-year-old is an odd place to draw your moral line in the sand. After Logan unzips Ray’s pants finds out why the show is titled what it is, she exclaims “I knew it,” so clearly this is something that has been on her mind for some time. Hung’s always been a show I’ve watched with a kind of detached amusement but this season has really been getting me invested. Kudos.
